Cody Preps for Week of Events Showcasing Top Western Artists

CODY, Wyo., Sept. 13, 2024 – As Cody Yellowstone’s summer season winds down, locals and visitors alike turn their attention to a weeklong celebration of Western art.

The 43rd annual Rendezvous Royale and Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale are set for Sept. 16-23 and include an online Live Silent Auction, “Scout’s Mini Sale” devoted to small works, a “Buy-It-Now” sale, workshops, exhibitions, an art walk and other events. Rendezvous Royale culminates in a gala weekend including the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale on Friday night and the Buffalo Bill Quick Draw and Brunch Saturday morning. The annual Patrons Ball Black-Tie Gala at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West rounds out the week.

“Western art is a huge part of our town’s makeup, and we are proud to celebrate our artists and their achievements as they receive the recognition they deserve,” said Ryan Hauck, executive director of Cody Yellowstone, the marketing arm for the region that includes the towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse, a large swath of the Shoshone National Forest and about half of Yellowstone National Park.

Rendezvous Royale events are organized by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale and By Western Hands.

“The Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale events during Rendezvous Royale week are truly special and have been coveted by the Cody community for 43 years,” said Katelyn Parker, director of the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale. “The events bring people together in the celebration of our western heritage, rustic culture and the artistic works that represent the spirit of the American West. The Buffalo Bill Art Show is showcasing works by 104 living artists who all see the West in different ways, and viewers have a unique opportunity to witness the history, landscape and wildlife through the artists’ interpretations. I am honored to be a part of what is undeniably a brilliant and unforgettable show and experience.”

A Legacy of Art

Cody’s heritage of art dates back to July 4, 1924 when The Scout, a sculpture of town founder William F. “Buffalo Bill Cody” created by New York heiress Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was dedicated. The Scout is the cornerstone of the Whitney Western Art Museum, one of five museums within the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The Whitney is known for its works by famous Western artists such as Charlie Russell, Frederic Remington, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt and many others.

The town was lauded by USA Today in a list of Top Small Town Arts Scenes last year.

Art Around Town

Cody features numerous other art attractions that showcase art crafted by local and regional artists. The Cody Country Art League is also a favorite stop, with pottery, photography, mosaics, jewelry and other artwork crafted by more than 200 artists. Another celebrated attraction is By Western Hands Museum & Gallery, a non-profit artisan guild that showcases Western design and functional art and includes galleries and workshop space. Famed functional furniture designer Thomas Molesworth popularized a Western design style that continues to inspire modern artists.

Cody is also home to numerous art galleries showcasing paintings, sculptures, jewelry and other original pieces created by local and regional artists and photographers.
